Burning in the chest, sour burps, a heavy stomach after meals: for many people, acidity has become a daily companion. Antacids give quick relief, but the problem keeps coming back. Nature cure looks at why your digestion is disturbed, and corrects the habits behind it.
Why acidity happens
In nature cure, digestion is governed by Agni, the fire element. When meals are irregular, heavy, rushed or eaten late at night, this fire becomes disturbed. Food isn't digested properly, and the result is gas, bloating and acidity.
Stress, lack of sleep, too much tea or coffee, and long gaps between meals all make it worse.
1. Eat on time, eat calmly
Your body loves routine. Eating at roughly the same times every day helps your digestion prepare for food.
- Don't skip breakfast or leave long gaps between meals.
- Make lunch your main meal, when digestion is strongest.
- Finish dinner at least 2–3 hours before bed.
- Sit down, chew well, and avoid screens while eating.
2. Soothing kitchen remedies
Several everyday ingredients are traditionally used to calm acidity and support digestion:
- Fennel seeds (saunf): chew half a teaspoon after meals.
- Coriander seed water: soak a teaspoon of seeds overnight and drink the water in the morning.
- Coconut water: naturally cooling and gentle on the stomach.
- Buttermilk with roasted cumin: a light, digestive drink after lunch.
3. Reduce common triggers
You don't have to give up everything you enjoy. But notice which foods make your symptoms worse, and cut back on them:
- Deep-fried, very spicy and very sour foods
- Excess tea and coffee, especially on an empty stomach
- Late-night heavy meals and packaged snacks
- Carbonated drinks
“Digestion is the root of health. When the fire within is balanced, the body heals itself.”
4. Walk after meals, and 5. sleep on time
A gentle 10–15 minute walk after meals helps digestion. Lying down immediately after eating often makes acidity worse.
Good sleep matters just as much. Late nights and irregular sleep disturb digestion. Aim for a regular bedtime and 7–8 hours of rest.
When to see a doctor
Occasional acidity is common. But please consult a doctor promptly if you have:
- Acidity almost every day for several weeks
- Difficulty swallowing, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss
- Black stools or blood in vomit (seek urgent care)
- Chest pain, especially with sweating or breathlessness (seek emergency care)
For long-standing acidity, gas or IBS, a personalised nature cure plan can help treat the root cause. Book a consultation with Dr. Rupareliya.
